How to Craft a Brand Voice That Doesn't Sound Like Everyone Else

Your brand voice is your personality on paper. Here's how to find one that's genuinely yours — and actually worth reading.

How to Craft a Brand Voice That Doesn't Sound Like Everyone Else

Your brand voice is how your business sounds when it speaks — in emails, on your website, in captions, in customer service chats. And in a world where every brand claims to be authentic, human, and passionate, the real challenge isn't finding a voice. It's finding one that's actually yours.

Most brand voices fail for the same reason: they're aspirational rather than honest. Brands want to sound friendly, bold, smart, and warm all at once, and the result is a kind of corporate blandness dressed in casual clothing. The fix isn't a longer list of adjectives. It's specificity.

Start by asking: if your brand were a person, what would they actually be like? Not just adjectives — imagine them in a real conversation. Are they the kind of person who explains things carefully, or do they drop you into the deep end and trust you to swim? Do they use humor? Are they direct or discursive? What would they never say?

The brands that stand out have voices with genuine edges. They're willing to be a little weird, a little opinionated, a little specific. They don't write for everyone. They write for their people — and their people feel it immediately. That sense of recognition, of 'this brand gets me,' is what voice is actually for.

Once you have a sense of your voice, test it in the wild. Write a homepage headline, a welcome email, an error message, a product description. Does it sound like the same person across all of them? If it does, you've found something real. If it doesn't, keep going — the voice is in there somewhere. You just have to dig until you find it.
